The equipment is mainly composed of light cylinder and automatic tracking device. Inside the optical cylinder is composed of seven light bars, inner cylinder, thermoelectric stack and desiccant cylinder. The seven light bars are used to minimize internal reflections, form the opening angle of the instrument and limit air turbulence inside the instrument. Outside the light bar is the inner cylinder, which makes the dry air inside the light bar and the outer cylinder airtight to minimize the effect of ambient temperature on the thermopile. The mouth of the outer cylinder is fitted with a JGS3 quartz glass sheet, which transmits radiant light at wavelengths from 0.27 to 3.2 µm to facilitate direct solar radiation measurements. The barrel is equipped with a desiccant to prevent the generation of water vapor condensation.
The sensing component of the direct radiation sensor is the core part of the light cylinder, which consists of a fast-responding wire-wound electroplated thermopile. The sensing part is coated with non-glossy black paint on the side facing the sun, and below it is the hot contact of the thermopile. When sunlight irradiates the hot contact, the temperature rises, and it forms a temperature difference with the cold contact on the other side, thus generating an electric potential, which is directly proportional to the intensity of direct radiation from the sun.
