What is the difference between LoRa and LoRaWAN
LoRa is a low-power long-distance wireless communication technology, mainly for applications such as the Internet of Things or M2M, and is an important wireless technology for low-power wide area networks (LPWAN).
And LoRa technology includes LoRaWAN protocol and LoRa protocol. In fact, LoRaWAN refers to the MAC layer networking protocol, while LoRa is just a physical layer protocol.
The difference between LoRa and LoRaWAN:
Next, let’s talk about the difference between LoRa and LoRaWAN in detail:
LORA features: long-distance, low power consumption, multi-node, low-cost, anti-interference characteristics, at the same time LoRa low rate, small data transmission.
LoRa frequency band: 433/470/868/915MHz frequency band
LoRa networking application: LoRa adopts TMD networking mode. It is often said that time-sharing networking, which can be a star network. LoRa application is a common scene where there are many local collection nodes, small data, and low rate. Front-end: sensors, meters, and other related.
LoRaWAN is a set of protocol standards based on the LoRa physical layer transmission technology based on the MAC layer. Corresponding products include LoRaWAN nodes, LoRaWAN gateways and LoRaWAN protocols and data cloud platforms.
When using LoRaWAN products, there are two interfaces to the user:
✦One is a data interface between the bottom sensor and the LoRaWAN node, and the sensor data is transmitted to the network through this interface;
✦ One is that there is a data interface between the LoRaWAN protocol and the data cloud platform and the user's application to transmit the data of the network application.
The optimal usage scenarios of LoRa and LoRaWAN:
✦ For some small projects, if the number of terminals is less than one thousand, LoRa point-to-point communication can be used directly. A simple private protocol can meet the demand and reduce the cost.
✦ has higher requirements for security and needs to be compatible with other LoRaWAN products. When the number of devices is in the thousands to tens of thousands, it is difficult to achieve it by simply relying on LoRa.
At this time, we have to consider designing the entire project in accordance with the LoRaWAN protocol.
