Wi-Fi 6E standard announced: support 6GHz spectrum resources faster

A few days ago, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that future Wi-Fi 6 devices will be able to use the 6GHz frequency band and support Wi-Fi 6 in the 6GHz frequency band.

To ensure that the industry unifies the common terminology, the standard will be named Wi-Fi 6E to distinguish it from the original Wi-Fi 6 standard. Wi-Fi 6E is currently awaiting approval from global regulatory agencies.

 According to reports, the new 6GHz standard will be very suitable to promote the continuous growth of Wi-Fi. This frequency band is adjacent to 5GHz, has greater availability and wider channel size, and can be affected by traditional Wi-Fi 4 or Wi-Fi. In fact, at the end of July last year, industry giants such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft jointly applied to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to approve the civic use of the 6GHz frequency band so that civilian electronic devices can communicate wirelessly on the 6GHz frequency band. The Wi-Fi Alliance stated that Wi-Fi 6E will be particularly suitable for AR and VR, and it will also help solve the problem of insufficient Wi-Fi spectrum. It can provide continuous channels that can accommodate 14 additional 80MHz channels and 7 additional 160MHz channels. Spectrum block, due to more channels and wider spectrum space, interference between Wi-Fi networks will also be reduced.

Although higher frequency spectrum can provide faster speed and greater capacity, its range is smaller and more easily blocked by obstacles.

Therefore, the 6GHz frequency band is unlikely to replace the existing Wi-Fi frequency band. Because of the huge potential of Wi-Fi in the 6GHz band, people's use of it may increase rapidly. Analysts predict that once regulators open up the 6GHz frequency band, the first batch of Wi-Fi devices using this frequency band will include Wi-Fi 6E smartphones, such as the 2020 iPhone, and then enterprise-level access points. Qualcomm also expressed its appreciation for the leading role of the Wi-Fi Alliance, saying that the 6GHz band will open a new era of high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi 6 experience.
