Soil moisture sensors play a vital role in agriculture and environmental science. By monitoring moisture levels in the soil, these sensors provide farmers, gardeners and scientists with important information about soil health, plant growth and climate change.

I. How Soil Moisture Sensors Work

The main function of soil moisture sensors is to measure the moisture content in the soil. Their working principle is based on different technologies, including capacitance, resistance and spectrum analysis. Among them, the most commonly used is the capacitive soil moisture sensor.

Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensors

Capacitance soil moisture sensors utilize the correlation between the soil's dielectric constant and the soil moisture content. When the sensor is inserted into the soil, it interacts with the water molecules in the soil and changes its capacitance value depending on the amount of water. This capacitance value is then converted into a voltage or current signal for further processing and recording.

Resistive Soil Moisture Sensor

Resistive soil moisture sensors, on the other hand, measure moisture content based on the electrical conductivity of the soil. When moisture is present, the electrical conductivity of the soil increases, which changes the resistance value of the sensor. This resistance value is also converted into a recordable voltage or current signal.

Second, the soil moisture sensor function and application

The soil moisture sensor has a variety of application functions, mainly including:

Farm irrigation management: by monitoring soil moisture content in real time, farmers can pinpoint when they need to water their crops, thereby improving water use efficiency and ensuring optimal growing conditions for their crops.

Plant growth research: In laboratory and field experiments, soil moisture sensors can be used to study plant growth responses under different moisture conditions, providing a basis for crop breeding and improvement.

Soil contamination monitoring: By continuously monitoring the chemical composition of soil moisture, it is possible to assess the quality and health of the soil, as well as detect possible sources of contamination.

Climate change research: Data from soil moisture sensors can help scientists understand the impact of climate change on the soil moisture cycle, and thus assess its effects on the environment and ecosystems.

Agricultural Decision Support Systems: Combined with other environmental sensors and data analysis techniques, soil moisture sensors can provide farmers with advice and support in making decisions about crop cultivation, irrigation, fertilizer application, and more.

Water management: In water-scarce areas, real-time monitoring of soil moisture can help decision makers rationalize the allocation and use of limited water resources to meet agricultural and other needs.

Ecological restoration and protection: Monitoring soil moisture conditions can help assess and improve the health of ecosystems such as forests, grasslands and wetlands, providing a basis for ecological restoration and protection.

Precision agriculture: With accurate soil moisture data, farmers can develop precise agricultural management measures for soil moisture conditions in different regions, improving the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural production.
